An octogenarian’s credit for long life

I’m 86 years old, and I believe my long life is thanks to a habit I picked up when I was in the army—I do it every day. I want to encourage everyone to take care of their health by exercising regularly.

Living a long life can depend on different things, like your genes, what you eat, how much you move, and your overall lifestyle.

Peter Thomas, an 86-year-old man, recently shared his secret for staying healthy on his TikTok account (@PeterHThomas). He explained that looking after his health has always been his top priority. He said, "I pay attention to what I eat and make sure I work out every day. I was fortunate because, when I was in the army, exercising was something we had to do."

Peter got used to working out during his service, and it became a part of his daily routine. "You had to do your drills and training, and after seven years, it just became a habit for me." Peter highly recommends that others also make exercise a regular part of their lives. He advised, "If you don’t have a workout routine, change that. Make your health one of the most important things you focus on every day. Your health is your most valuable asset, so look after it."

An article in the National Library of Medicine supports this idea, saying that exercise helps reduce the risk of serious health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and cancer.

At 86, Peter is still vibrant and has no plans to retire. He said, "I will never retire. Retirement is just a word for me. I want to have lots of fun with my life."

He believes it’s essential to have a sense of purpose. "Think about whether you are doing good things for others and giving back." Peter finds his purpose through a one-minute series on social media, which he calls an "adventure." He added, "I feel blessed and honoured that I can give back at this time while having so much fun." So, he encourages everyone, "Think about what you want to do to have fun and stay engaged as you grow older. Having a purpose is key; if you have a purpose, that’s what makes your retirement worthwhile."
